Traffic accident
Traffic accident overview
Traffic accident is a generic term to encompass all of the following accident types:
- Car accidents
- Motorcycle accidents
- Bike accidents
- Cycling accidents
- Pedestrian accidents
As a result of the many types of travel listed above, traffic accidents can have varying consequences relating to the injuries sustained and recovery times. More vulnerable road users such as pedestrians are more likely to be injured in a traffic accident as they have little or no protection from impacts with vehicles and road surfaces.
Traffic accident statistics
The statistics for traffic accidents are published by the department for transport The system for collection is known as STATS192. STATS19 covers traffic accidents involving injury occurring on the public highway (including footways) in which at least one road vehicle or a vehicle in collision with a pedestrian is involved which becomes known to the police within 30 days of its occurrence. The vehicle need not be moving and accidents involving stationary vehicles and pedestrians or users are included. Traffic statistics are then collated from 50 data items for each traffic accident.
