£30k fines for fatal accident at workRSS Feed
An accident at work that killed a Salford worker six years ago has resulted in fines totalling £30,000.
Thirty-six-year-old John Cain was killed by an excavator bucket on a digger while working on a project to demolish the Albert Park Inn in 2004.
The firm, Windmill Demolition Company Ltd, was fined £15,000 while the principal contractors on the site Barry Godliman and Robert Watson were each ordered to pay £7,500 after admitting to breaching health and safety rules.
Mr Cain's ex-partner and mother of his three children Karen Doran described the loss as "like an open wound".
"Hopefully, now that those responsible for health and safety on the site have been punished, we'll be able to put this behind us and get on with our lives," she said.
"I just hope the prosecution will send a message out to companies that they cannot get away with ruining people's lives."
The news comes as a new report reveals that workers in Northern Ireland are more likely to be killed at work than people in other parts of the UK.
