iPods pose traffic accident riskRSS Feed
A pressure group is to tell an international road safety conference that handheld devices such as mobile phones and iPods are a traffic accident risk.
Tune into Traffic will say that laws prohibiting the use of mobile phones in cars are being ignored, especially by young people.
The pressure group warns that traffic accidents kill more young people than anything else, with under-25s accounting for almost 40 per cent of injuries on the roads.
Manpreet Darroch, who founded the pressure group, said: "Road traffic collisions are the biggest cause of death among young people and, from our own observations and what young people are telling us, the distraction posed by these devices is huge."
Figures released this week from the US show traffic accidents caused by distractions from the likes of mobile phones are on the rise.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that the number of distraction-related fatalities on US roads increased from ten per cent of total deaths to 16 per cent between 2005 and 2009.
