Accident at work sees vehicle repair firm finedRSS Feed
The death of a man who fell through a skylight in an accident at work has led to the prosecution of a vehicle repair firm.
Quality Exhaust Supplies and Fitting Service was fined £15,000 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after employee Mohammad Hashim plummeted through a fragile garage roof.
The 76-year-old was helping to fix a new advertising sign to the roof of GB Autos in Manchester when he slipped off the sloping roof and landed on a concrete floor four metres below.
Despite being treated at the scene, he died two weeks later in hospital and the HSE discovered Mr Hashim has been warned about the fragile roof by the owner, but nothing was done to reduce risk of an accident.
Matt Greenly, the investigating inspector at HSE, commented: "It simply isn't good enough to warn someone about a danger. The company should have found another way of installing the sign without putting lives at risk."
Elsewhere, Chalcroft Limited was recently fined after two employees were left seriously injured when they fell eight metres from a temporary structure.
