Accident at work sees employee lose 2 fingersRSS Feed
A £3,500 fine has been handed to a Macclesfield firm after an employee lost two fingers in an accident at work.
The local magistrate's court heard how a 34-year-old machine operator was polishing a piece of metal spinning on a lathe when the incident occurred.
His right hand was dragged into the mechanism and his middle and ring finger were severed at the second knuckle as a result.
The accident occurred at Proseal's Adlington Industrial Estate site and an investigation found the manufacturing company had failed to give the employee proper training on how to safely clean the machine.
Investigating inspector for the Health and Safety Executive Lisa Lewis commented: "This was a needless injury which could easily have been avoided if Proseal had followed health and safety guidance, which is now nearly 20 years old."
The news comes after Schlegel Automotive Europe was recently prosecuted following an incident that saw an employee lose four fingers when cleaning a blockage around the nozzle of an injection-moulding machine.
