Firm fined after man loses fingertip in accident at workRSS Feed
An accident at work that saw an employee's fingertip cut off by a circular saw has resulted in a firm being fined £10,000.
Eaton Williams Group, trading as Colman Moducel, was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive for failing to provide its staff with sufficient information regarding how to safely use a circular saw.
The tip of the worker's right middle finger was taken off by the tool as he was using it to trim metal parts and the HSE concluded that the top guard on the machine was positioned incorrectly and that proper training for using the device had not been provided.
An emergency stop button on the saw was also faulty and HSE inspector David Kivlin said the incident could have been prevented if the company "had taken the time to look at the risks involved in operating the circular saw".
In addition to the £10,000 fine, Eaton Williams Group also had to pay costs of £4,105.
The staff member's finger was reattached and he was able to return to work, but more serious incidents are commonplace.
HSE data shows an average of 31 workers were killed in workplace accidents in the manufacturing industry annually over the past five years, while over 4,500 major injuries were reported every year.
