Man suffers broken bone after arm pierced by steel rodsRSS Feed
The Health and Safety Executive has prosecuted a company after an employee suffered a broken right arm during an accident at work.
Machine operator Steven Rowe had his arm impaled by two steel bars when attempting to fix a contraption at Allevand Springs in Tonypandy.
The bar drawing line machine required an adjustment to the air pressure and as Mr Rowe attempted to do this, two steel rods shot out of the device and pierced his right forearm.
As well as a broken bone, the 49-year-old was left needing 14 stitches in his left arm, where he had attempted to deflect other bars.
Allevard Springs was found guilty of failing to take measures to protect workers from risk of exposure to the rods as they ejected and preventing access to the machine as it is running.
Elsewhere, Drax Power and Konecranes UK were recently prosecuted after a worker sustained a broken foot when a 13kg weight dropped nearly four metres from an overhead crane.
