New employees 'most at risk of accident at work'RSS Feed
New and inexperienced individuals are the most likely to experience an accident at work, firms have been warned.
Speaking at the RenewableUK Health and Safety 2012 conference in Manchester, chair of the Health and Safety Executive Judith Hackitt explained how this is the case in "any industry or sector".
She explained how the rapidly-expanding renewables field will be "no exception", with increased activity levels and a potential skills gap making accidents extremely likely.
"Our experience, backed up by considerable evidence, demonstrates that new and inexperienced recruits are the most vulnerable in any industry or sector," Ms Hackitt remarked.
The expert referenced the wind energy sector as one example of where there has been a sharp rise in the number of accidents as the industry has grown.
Ms Hackitt's comments follow those of first minister Alex Salmond, who recently welcomed news that Korean company Samsung Heavy Industries is to base its first offshore wind farm in Fife.
