Broken bone leads to accident claimRSS Feed
An accident claim has been brought against two companies after a worker in North Yorkshire suffered a broken foot when a weight landed on his reinforced safety boots.
The 13kg weight fell nearly four metres from an overhead crane that was being operated by two mechanical fitters when a chain detached, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports.
Drax Power and Konecrancs UK were prosecuted following an investigation into the incident, which saw one of the employees left with a fractured right foot.
It was discovered the weight had not been suitably secured in place, while the crane had missed two of its four-monthly services, meaning it had not been checked for nine months.
HSE inspector Andy Denison said: "It is not acceptable to turn a blind eye to the on-going maintenance and repair of work equipment."
Elsewhere, Benchmark Fabrication was recently fined after a worker suffered a fractured pelvis when he fell from a beam onto a wooden pallet below.
