Fatal accident at work results in £65k fineRSS Feed
An accident at work that led to the death of a lorry driver has resulted in a Hampshire lift manufacturer being fined £65,000 and ordered to pay costs of £60,000.
The Health and Safety Executive prosecuted Wessex Lift Company after 27-year-old Adam Millichip suffered internal organ failure after his chest was crushed while working for a haulage organisation.
It is understood Mr Millichip was watching pallets being offloaded off a lorry he had driven when one of the one-tonne structures fell and trapped him against the side of the van.
He died shortly afterwards and an investigation by the HSE concluded inadequate controls were in place at the time of the incident and not enough consideration had been given to the risks involved in offloading.
Elsewhere, J H Carruthers Limited was recently prosecuted after its employee Colin Dickinson was fatally injured when a suspended beam fell five metres and landed on his chest.
