Casting company fined following employee burnsRSS Feed
Burns sustained by a factory worker in Staffordshire has led to an aluminium casting company being prosecuted.
JVM Castings pleaded guilty breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined £6,000, as well as ordered to pay £4,000 costs.
This followed an incident in July 2010 that saw employee Asim Qureshi suffer serious burns to his shoulder, led, right arm and face after 650-degree Celsius molten material landed on him as he was operating a die cast machine.
An inspection by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the rear of the machine was unguarded and the operator's overalls were unsuitable for the amount of molten metal spray.
Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Tariq Khan said: "The company's risk assessment had identified blow backs as a danger, but did not include any measures to remove or reduce the risk."
The news comes after Copper Alloys foundry in Stoke-on-Trent was fined following an incident that saw a worker require skin grafts after falling into an unfenced pit containing molten metal.
