Accident at work leads to plastics firm fineRSS Feed
A fine has been brought against a plastics firm that was found responsible for failing to protect a staff member from having an accident at work.
An employee at DuBois Ltd in Corby severed his finger while trying to fix a problem with a colour dosing unit attached to an injection moulding machine.
The man's middle finger on his left hand became trapped in the rotating dial and had to be amputated above the knuckle, as doctors were unable to save it.
An investigation into the incident found the machine's guard had been removed in order to earlier calibrate the machine and had not been replaced.
Sally Harris, from the Health and Safety Executive said: "This meant the company did not prevent access to dangerous rotating parts and as a result a man suffered an entirely foreseeable, preventable and painful injury."
Elsewhere, SIG Manufacturing Ltd in Derbyshire was recently fined after employee Hugo Valdes Vera suffered severe and permanent hand injuries when operating a machine at the factory.
