Headphones-related traffic accidents soarRSS Feed
The number of people involved in a traffic accident while wearing headphones has tripled in the past six years, a new study shows.
Researchers uncovered a sharp increase in injuries to people wearing headphones in public, with teenagers, men and young adults most likely to be affected.
In 2004 to 2005, just 16 deaths or injuries to pedestrians wearing headphones were reported in the US, compared to 47 in 2010 to 2011, reports the study published in journal Injury Prevention.
Some 68 per cent of the victims were men, while 67 per cent were under the age of 30, and around one in ten of all cases occurring to individuals under the age of 18.
Furthermore, in many cases there was a warning, such as a horn or siren, sounded before the crash.
Researchers explained: "The use of headphones with handheld devices may pose a safety risk to pedestrians, especially in environments with moving vehicles. Further research is needed to determine if and how headphone use compromises pedestrian safety."
