Door firm fined after employee loses fingers in accident at workRSS Feed
A door manufacturer has been fined after a machine operator was involved in an accident at work causing him severe and permanent hand injuries.
Hugo Valdes Vera was working at SIG Manufacturing Ltd on Milnhay Road, Langley Mill, Derbyshire when his left hand became trapped between two heated platens in a multi-platen door press.
The 37-year-old had been loading and unloading doors with colleagues, working at the rear of the machine, when the accident happened.
While the press was guarded at the sides, there was no guarding at the rear of the machine other than a trip wire at low level which protected the area beneath the plates, and a two-hand control was operational at the front, which meant the operator had to keep both hands on the control buttons whilst the press was in motion.
Furthermore, visibility around the back of the machine for the operator was restricted.
One of the employers operated the press, not realising that Mr Valdes Vera was behind it, and he lost parts of three fingers and has been unable to return to work.
