Firm fined after accident at work left man partially disabledRSS Feed
A logistics firm has been fined after an accident at work left one employee with a broken neck.
Barry Hill, 60, was loading goods onto a truck at Palletways (UK) Ltd, Fradley Distribution Park, when he noticed that one of the computer cabinets was rocking on his forklift truck.
He got out in an attempt to catch the cabinet, but it fell forward, hitting him on the head and knocking him to the ground.
Mr Hill sustained a broken neck and right wrist, and has not returned to work since the incident occurred on August 22nd 2008.
After the incident occurred, Mr Hill was bleeding from a head wound but the depot manager was unaware of who the first aider was and took the injured worker around the site with him looking for help.
When they found the first aider, he did not recognise the seriousness of the injuries and drove Mr Hill by car to a hospital with no accident and emergency unit, where he was airlifted to Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham .
He has been left partially disabled as a result of the incident and Palletways (UK) Ltd, of Wood End Lane, Fradley, was fined £60,000 and ordered to pay £41,339 in costs.
