Father of two left paraplegic after accident at workRSS Feed
A scaffolding firm has been fined after a worker lost his ability to walk in an accident at work.
David Collins was unloading 21 ft long scaffolding tubes from the back of a truck using a vehicle-mounted crane.
He was standing under the load operating the crane controls when one of the lifting slings detached from the crane hook, causing a one and a half tonne metal tube to fall on him.
The 31-year-old father of two suffered severe injuries to his head, back and leg and was left paraplegic as a result of the accident at work.
Spectra Scaffolding, of Warth Road Industrial Estate, Bury, was fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £45,000 in costs.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Mr Lindsay Hope said: "The lift wasn't properly planned or supervised and Mr Collins hadn't been sufficiently trained in how to use the crane and slings properly.
"Furthermore, the equipment had not been properly maintained and should never have been used."
