Road safety eye test campaign receives recognitionRSS Feed
A campaign to promote eye tests among drivers as a way to stop motorists having a traffic accident has received recognition.
Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has been awarded Brake and Direct Line's Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month award for her campaign, which aims to introduce regular, compulsory tests for drivers.
She began the campaign in 2009 after being approached by constituent Joy Barnes, whose niece Fiona Buckley was killed in a traffic accident involving a driver with defective eyesight.
Ms Munn is calling for eye tests to be carried out by qualified practitioners using a scientifically-recognised method, instead of the number plate test that is currently utilised during practical driving tests.
She also wants drivers to be re-tested as standard at least once every ten years, when they apply for a new licence photocard, and to promote the importance of drivers attending an eye test at least every two years.
