Drivers should update Highway code knowledge to avoid a traffic accident

Drivers should regularly update their knowledge of the Highway Code, experts have warned - a measure that could prevent them being involved in a traffic accident.

Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said that it is important to "maintain and update" driving abilities.

He noted that it is easy to become complacent about driving and the Highway Code, but motorists should remember that road rules and environments do change over time.

"We recommend that everyone buys a copy of the latest Highway Code every few years, or reads it on the Directgov website, to keep themselves up to date," said the expert.

This follows research that revealed that British people have so little knowledge of the Highway Code that two thirds are confused by basic road signs every day.

The study, conducted by motor oil firm Castrol also discovered that one in 20 motorists never take notice of highway signposts.
