Traffic accidents 'rocket at Christmas'RSS Feed
People heading home for Christmas should take extra care on the roads, with research showing a spike in traffic accident around the festive period.
A study from motor insurer Axa revealed that over the past two years, there has been a 45 per cent rise in traffic accidents on December 20th and 24th, compared to the rest of the month.
The company predicted that up to 56,000 drivers could be involved in a traffic accident during this time.
However, the worst day to travel is December 23rd, when collisions increase by 65 per cent.
It also emerged that the last month of the year is the worst for car crashes overall.
Sarah Vaughan, motor director at Axa, commented: "We know that it can be a very stressful time of year for drivers with overloaded cars, excitable kids, long journeys and dark, wintry conditions. But it is a sad truth that many will end up spending Christmas sorting out an insurance claim or worse."
