Blacksmith fined after worker falls 8 metres in accident at workRSS Feed
A blacksmith has been fined after an employee was seriously injured in an accident at work.
Martin Mundie had climbed a ladder with three other workers onto a roof to carry out work at Muirden Farm, Turriff, Aberdeenshire.
A short time after, there was a loud crack and his colleagues turned round to see him disappearing through the skylight.
The 23-year-old fell the eight metres to the concrete floor below, breaking his arm and wrist.
Mr Mundie, who was employed by Joseph Adams, needed a bone graft and two operations to insert three plates and six pins, and was off work for ten months.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Mr Adams had failed to assess any of the risks involved or put a safe system of work in place. He was fined £4,500.
HSE inspector Alan Mackinnon commented: "Mr Mundie has been left with significant and lasting injuries that could easily have been avoided if Joseph Adams had thought about the obvious risks involved when working on the roof."
