Bus falls on apprentice in accident at workRSS Feed
A teenage apprentice needed restorative plastic surgery to his nose and eye socket after an accident at work in which a bus fell onto him, damaging his face.
Ben Burgin was working with an experienced fitter to correct a braking fault on a bus at Stagecoach Yorkshire's garage in Wakefield Road, Barnsley.
Instead of moving the bus to an inspection pit, they decided to fix the fault on the garage floor.
Mr Burkin was working under the bus near the front passenger wheel when the vehicle's air suspension failed suddenly and the bus dropped on him, badly injuring his face.
The company, based in Dawbank, Stockport, was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £8,473 in costs.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Steve Kay commented: "When employing young people, it is crucial that firms take particular account of their obvious lack of experience and lack of awareness of risks."
