Motorway restrictions for learner drivers 'could cut traffic accidents'RSS Feed
A new initiative has been launched to cut the number of traffic accidents involving inexperienced drivers on motorways.
Mike Penning, road safety minister, has announced that learners will only be able to tackle motorways when accompanied by a qualified instructor during driving lessons.
Julie Townsend, campaigns director at Brake, claimed that it is positive that the government is looking at measures to reduce the risk among those learning to drive.
"Young drivers are involved in a huge proportion of crashes that kill and seriously injure because of their inexperience coupled with the tendency of many to take risks," she explained.
Ms Townsend said that more restrictions should be introduced to control learner drivers and reduce the number of traffic accidents they cause.
Recent research published by insurer RIAS found that there is strong support among the British public for older drivers to stop getting behind the wheel in old age.
Nearly two thirds of people believe that there should be a mandatory maximum age for motorists.
