Construction company fined after balcony fallRSS Feed
A construction company and its director have been fined after a worker fell from a balcony and sustained serious injuries in an accident at work.
Karl Kraus was working on the build of a large domestic property at Incline Way, Saundersfoot, when he was told to remove a concrete block that was laid across a doorway.
As he threw the block, he fell backwards off the balcony and dropped the seven metres to the ground below.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the house was being built without any form of scaffolding or fall prevention.
As a result, Mr Kraus underwent surgery to pin the bone in his left heel and was in a plaster cast for approximately ten months.
He is still in constant pain and unable to walk on uneven ground without risking a fall and is to undergo further surgery, but his career in the construction industry is over.
Preseli Construction & Maintenance Ltd of Waterloo Industrial Estate, Pembroke Dock, was fined £12,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,376.25. Director Mr Christopher Newell of The Glebe, Tenby, was fined £4,000 with costs to pay of £2,376.25.
