Drink drivers 'will see insurance premiums rocket'RSS Feed
It is a well known fact that people who drink and drive are at risk of causing a traffic accident, with the Department for Transport reporting that 16 per cent of road fatalities occur when drivers are over the legal alcohol limit.
Furthermore, six per cent of all road casualties are caused by a drunk driver.
Research from MoneySupermarket has revealed that motorists with a drink driving conviction (DR10 penalty) on their driving licence could see their car insurance premiums soar.
Such drivers could see the cost of their cover rise from an average of £424 per year to £784, and some may even find it difficult to get any insurance at all.
Peter Harrison, insurance spokesperson at the organisation, commented that the temptation to drink drive could rise over Christmas.
"Ensuring you have adequate travel arrangements in place to get you home is essential as driving while under the influence should not be an option in any circumstances," he said.
