Firm fined after employee falls four metres from truckRSS Feed
A waste collection firm has been fined after an employee fell from the roof of a truck in an accident at work.
The 44-year-old had climbed up a collection vehicle to remove some waste before falling the four metres to the ground.
He was balancing on some metal bars to reach the stuck waste when the access fixings gave way, causing the accident at work, which left him with a broken right elbow and damage to his left foot.
A Heath and Safety Executive investigation found the company had allowed workers to use the metal bars to reach the roof of the vehicle - despite this not being their purpose.
Neales Waste Management Ltd was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £11,661 in costs.
HSE inspector Imran Siddiqui said: "The employee at Neales was lucky he wasn't more seriously injured in the fall. He could easily have suffered life-changing injuries as a result."
