Firm fined after employee loses fingers in accident at workRSS Feed
An engineering firm has been fined after an accident at work in which a young employee lost three fingers.
The 21-year-old had parts of three fingers cut off by an industrial saw at Adelaide Engineering Company Ltd's factory on Aspinall Street in Heywood.
It was found that the blade was 64cm long, but was being used to cut a piece of steel with a width of just 5cm.
Furthermore, there was no adjustable guard in place around the part of the blade not in use.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found the employee had not received any instructions or training on how to safely use the saw, and had been left unsupervised.
The Rochdale firm was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,514.
HSE inspector Laura Moran said: "Engineering firms must treat the safety of workers as their top priority. It's vital they properly assess the risks posed by machines to make sure employees aren't put in danger."
