Parents 'should reinforce road safety'RSS Feed
Parents must reinforce the road safety messages their children receive at school in order to avoid a traffic accident.
This is the view of Michelle Harrington from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), who advised that parents set a positive example to their children when out and about.
Finding lighter places in the street to cross, using designated crossing and practising the green cross code are all practical steps mums and dads can take to make sure their child stays safe on the road.
She also warned that gadgets such as mobile phones and iPods can distract children when crossing the street.
"It's a case of parents, teachers, any adult that is with them reminding them to not use those gadgets when they are crossing the road and concentrate on the matter in hand," said Ms Harrington.
This follows figures from the Department for Transport which indicated that traffic accidents are declining in the UK, with car accident casualties falling by seven per cent.
