Business partners fined after scaffolding collapseRSS Feed
Two business partners have been fined after they erected unsafe scaffolding, which could potentially have led to numerous accident claims.
Scaffolding Systems South West owner Terrence Foster and his partner in the business were both fined after a large section of scaffolding they had erected fell away.
The accident serious damaged a number of parked cars at the builders' merchants where the scaffolding had been put up to allow re-roofing to take place.
Health and Safety Executive inspectors found that netting had been fixed to the scaffolding, but extended almost a metre-and-a-half above the roof of the building.
It was also attached to the inside edge of the scaffolding rather than the outside, and acted as a sail in the wind, causing the scaffolding to collapse.
The recent case of 60-year-old Michael McCarthy from Verwood highlighted the dangers of working with scaffolding.
He had been contacted by P O Sharps Landscapes Ltd to extend the roof of a house, and fell three metres from scaffolding, fracturing his spine and ankles.
