Oldham roofer fined for putting lives at riskRSS Feed
A roofer from Oldham has appeared in court after putting lives at risk of an accident at work.
Colin Howles and another worker who he employed were caught on camera balancing dangerously on a house roof.
The pair were replacing the tiles on a mid-terrace house in Bardsley when they were photographed by a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector.
Trafford Magistrates' Court was told that no scaffolding had been erected at the back of the house to prevent either of the men falling almost six metres to the ground below.
Mr Howles was fined £350 and ordered to pay £600 in costs.
HSE inspector Tom Merry said: "It is through sheer luck that neither he nor the other worker became one of the thousands of people who are killed or seriously injured in a workplace falls every year."
In one of these instances, a worker at Moss Industrial Estate was knocked unconscious after falling from the roof of a forklift truck.
