Food company fined after worker loses most of handRSS Feed
A major European food firm has been fined £230,000 after a worker lost most of his right hand in a horrific accident at work.
Night shift supervisor Shaun Alexander was helping a member of his team to clean equipment at the 2 Sisters Food Group plant near Bungay in December 2009.
A safety guard had been removed from the machinery and Mr Alexander's hand was pulled into two rotating cogs and crushed.
The 42-year-old lost four fingers, part of his thumb and some of the palm of his hand.
One month later, fork lift driver Malcolm Raven was clearing a blockage in the system in the pre-slaughter area for chickens at the company. His arm was trapped and broken in the machinery.
It was found the company had fitted a by-pass device to over-ride a safety control that would have stopped this from happening.
Health and Safety Executive Inspector Julie Jarvey said: "Both these incidents were wholly avoidable.
"[Shaun Alexander] will have to live with the consequences of someone else's mistakes for the rest of his life."
