People who see car as extension of self 'drive aggressively'RSS Feed
People who associate their identity with their car could be more prone to aggressive driving, meaning they could be more likely to have a traffic accident, new findings suggest.
An article by Temple University professor Ayalla Ruvio documented two studies - one of which looked at the influence of personality, attitudes and values of young men and women.
The other added the factors of risk attraction, impulsivity, driving as a hedonistic activity and perceptions about time pressures.
It was found that people who see their car as an extension of their own identity are more likely to behave aggressively on the road and break the law.
People with compulsive tendencies were also more likely to drive aggressively, and increased materialism is also linked to a likelihood of aggressive driving tendencies.
According to authors, these findings "suggest that the perception of the car as an extension of the self leads to more aggressive behavior on the road rather than increased driving cautiousness."
