Dangerous drivers to get tougher prison sentencesRSS Feed
Dangerous drivers are to get longer prison sentences in the effort to cut the number of traffic accident, justice secretary Kenneth Clarke has said.
A new offence of causing serious injury by dangerous driving has been proposed.
This offence will carry an unlimited fine as well as a maximum five-year prison sentence - well above the current two-year maximum for dangerous driving.
Clarke noted that there was a gap in the law between dangerous driving offences and death by dangerous driving.
"Dangerous driving can destroy lives and have a devastating effect on victims and their families and friends," he said.
"We have listened to the victims of dangerous drivers, their families, MPs, judges and road safety groups and their experiences have directly informed these changes."
Andy Goldby, director of motor underwriting at Direct Line, said that the insurance organisation supported the proposed new maximum jail sentence.
"This is a step in the right direction," he said.
