Fife farming firm employee loses two toes in accident at workRSS Feed
A farming company in Fife has been fined after a worker lost two toes in an accident at work.
Peter Ednie, 26, was using a bucket in an effort to empty rainwater from a grain reception pit at R Todd & Company at Blacketyside Farm.
His foot became caught in the unsheathed part of a screw auger inside the pit. Although the screw auger was switched off, its power had not been isolated before Mr Ednie entered the pit.
Another worker accidentally activated the screw auger, severing Mr Ednie's small toe and causing him to have his fourth toe amputated.
Health and Safety Executive Inspector Harry Bottesch said: "If R Todd & Company had carried out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment and provided a safe system of work for the task of cleaning inside the grain reception pit, then this incident would not have happened."
This follows news that teenager Kyle Bishop had an accident at work at Ashley's of Yeovil which resulted in the loss of four of his fingers.
