Motorists should get winter tyres fittedRSS Feed
With a harsh winter ahead, car manufacturers and tyre companies are recommending that drivers get winter tyres fitted, in a bid to reduce the incidence of traffic accident.
The AA noted that winter tyres improve traction, braking and cornering on wet or icy roads when temperatures sink below seven degrees C.
However, the motoring organisation pointed out that last winter, some motor insurers said the fitting of winter tyres was a 'modification' which warranted an increased premium or withdrawal of cover.
Director of AA Insurance Simon Douglas commented: "I believe that this was a misunderstanding by some insurers. It is ludicrous for an insurer to penalise a driver for fitting winter tyres, given that doing so both underlines a
responsible approach to safety by the driver as well as reducing the likelihood of a collision."
Motorists should certainly check their tyres ahead of the winter, with Confused.com claiming that people driving with bald tyres could have any insurance claims denied.
