Man drowns in accident at work, firm fined £155kRSS Feed
A maintenance contractor has been fined £155,000 after a man drowned in an accident at work.
Michael Benn was working to clear sludge and debris from part of a cooling tower when he fell and drowned.
Colleagues nearby heard Mr Benn's shouts but by the time they reached the location, he had disappeared from view.
According to a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation, the men were working in poorly lit, noisy and slippery conditions.
Employers Epsco Ltd, of Arran Road, Perth, Scotland, were prosecuted for failure to implement a safe system of work.
HSE principal inspector Colin Mew commented: "The real tragedy here is the human cost that has resulted from the death of Michael Benn and the ease with which his death could have been prevented - I hope that other employers take heed of this message."
In other news, a farm worker died after he was crushed by a potato harvester in an accident at work.
