Sheffield firms fined after worker falls through roofRSS Feed
Two firms in Sheffield have been fined after a worker fell through a roof light in an accident at work.
Mr Nikitas Coulson was removing asbestos at Sheffield College in April last year when he fell through a fragile roof light, dropping three and a half metres from the flat roof to the ground below.
The 40-year-old required surgery to insert a plate into his arm due to the incident.
Both Mr Coulson's employer, Lilquest Asbestos Management, and the principal contractor for the project, JF Finnegan Ltd were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
"This was an obvious and known risk, and one that should have been dealt with before any work went ahead. Falls from height are the most common cause of fatal injuries in the workplace and are also responsible for many serious injuries," said HSE Inspector Dave Bradley.
In other news, recycling company Lowman Alloys Ltd was fined after worker Steven Graham was crushed between two skips, suffering a broken pelvis as well as other severe injuries.
