Teenagers loses four fingers in accident at workRSS Feed
A Somerset firm has been fined after a teenage employee lost four fingers in an accident at work involving a milling machine.
Nigel Ashley, of Ashley's of Yeovil was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £7,376.40 in a prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
Apprentice machinist Kyle Bishop, 18, was charging a cutter of a milling machine when he accidentally switched on the machine while the cutter was still in his hand.
He lost half an index finger, most of his middle finger and both the ring and little finger of his left hand in the incident, with surgery attempting to reattach the fingers being unsuccessful.
HSE Inspector Leo Diez said that if safe systems of work and adequate guards were in place, the accident would not have occurred.
"For a young man to lose four fingers in an incident like this at the start of his career is serious and severely affects his future employment prospects," he said.
This comes after automotive firm Grupo Antolin Leamington was fined after one of its workers lost a part of their finger in an accident at work.
