Man sentenced after accident at work causes death of friendRSS Feed
A self-employed roofing contractor has been given a suspended prison sentence after an accident at work resulting in the death of a friend.
Steve Mason was replacing a flat roof on a double garage near Chelmsford, and was accompanied by friend James Waughman.
Mr Waughman suffered a stroke on site and fell through the rafters of the garage rood, landing on the floor and suffering numerous injuries.
The 58-year-old died in hospital just over three weeks later.
Health and Safety Executive Inspector Lesley Balkham said: "Steve Mason failed to properly consider the risks of the job and act to limit the chances of injury or even death. He should have put guard-rails around the edge of the roof and taken measures to prevent anyone falling through it, but he chose not to."
This follows news that a meat firm has been fined £100,000 following an accident at work in which an employee died after being hit by a forklift truck.
The overloaded forklift truck was so badly loaded the driver did not see 60-year-old George Hardie as he made his way across the yard.
