A fertiliser company has been fined after an accident at work in which a 600kg bag of ammonium nitrate fell on an employee.
Robert Dearlove was cleaning up a spillage after bags of the fertiliser fell from a stack and had hooked the fallen bags onto the arms of a forklift truck.
The workers had noticed that two bags on the stack were leaning to one side, and Mr Dearlove was stood with his back to the pile.
One of these bags fell, hitting him on the back, forcing him over and striking his head on the floor.
The 32-year-old also suffered a serious back injury, fractured right thigh and ligament damage to his left leg.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Catherine Rimmer said: "Three years after an incident that could have easily been avoided, Robert Dearlove is still suffering as a result of his injuries."
This follows news that Lowman Alloys Ltd recycling centre was fined after a worker was crushed between two skips in an accident at work.
