Accident at work leaves teenager with facial burns

An apprentice worker was left with burns to his face and eye after an accident at work at an engineering factory in Great Yarmouth.

Jack Amey, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was working with a toxic cleaning substance called picking paste with no supervision.

The teenager was unaware that the paste causes severe burns if it comes into contact with the skin.

Moughton Engineering had previously banned the use of the substance as it posed a danger to staff, but an amount had been purchased for one piece of work.

Management had spotted this and again stopped its use but failed to remove it from the site.

HSE Inspector Martin Kneebone said: "This young man was let down by his employer and could have suffered far more serious injuries than he actually did, potentially even losing his sight."

This follows comments from the Health and Safety Executive which maintained that many injuries resulting from an accident at work could be caused by a failure to plan properly.
