Eye care providers 'play role in cutting traffic accidents'RSS Feed
Eye care professionals are increasingly playing a role in ensuring their patients do not cause a traffic accident, as the ageing population sees more over-65s take to the roads.
Researchers from the University of Michigan found that the majority of eye care providers feel it is their responsibility to question older individuals about driving.
Visual acuity and peripheral vision are routinely assessed, discovered the study, although other factors such as medical conditions and treatments which may affect driving ability, are often forgotten about.
Some 87 per cent of those surveyed reported they often inquired about glare, driving at night and reading signs.
However, questions about challenging driving manoeuvres such as merging and reversing, or about the patient's driving record were much rarer, with only eight per cent inquiring about these.
This follows a study from the Institute of Advanced Motorists which found that older drivers avoid being on the roads at peak traffic accident times such as during rush hours or late at night.
