Meat firm fined after worker diesRSS Feed
A meat firm has been fined £100,000 following a tragic accident at work in which an employee was hit by a forklift truck.
The forklift truck was so badly loaded that the driver failed to see 60-year-old George Hardie as he made his way across the yard to drop paperwork off at another part of the site.
Two large empty containers stacked on top of each other were being carried by the machinery, with the top of the load being approximately 160cm off the ground, meaning it was difficult for the driver to see over them.
The driver felt his truck go over something, climbed out and saw Mr Hardie lying on his back with the lower half of his body trapped underneath the forklift.
Health and Safety Executive Inspector Peter Dodd said: "If Vion Foods Scotland Ltd had taken simple steps to keep their employees safe, Mr Hardie would still be alive today."
In other news, a recycling company was fined after worker Steven Graham was crushed between two skips, being left with a broken pelvis and other severe injuries.
