Farmers 'must stay safe' during harvest seasonRSS Feed
Farmers have been urged to avoid engaging in any behaviour that could cause an accident at work during the harvest season.
James Hewetson-Brown, a Hampshire farmer, urged others in the profession to stay safe during the harvest season, after an accident at work left one of his employees with a broken hand.
During a turf cutting run, the worker was driving a harvester when an employee who was helping tried to free a blockage, but got his hand and arm stuck between the drive shaft and frame when his coat and glove caught on a protruding screw.
The hazardous part of the machinery had not been guarded and the drive was not disengaged.
Mr Hewetson-Brown commented: "Where finances allow, farmers should look to invest in modern technology that should be designed not only to keep everyone safer but increase productivity too. But where this is not an option older machinery may need guarding, replacing or improving."
This follows news that the owners of a Hertfordshire farm were fined after an accident at work in which an employee fell through the roof.
