Worker crushed between skips, recycling firm finedRSS Feed
A recycling company has been fined after a worker was crushed between two skips, suffering life-changing injuries in the accident at work.
Steven Graham was standing between two skips at the Lowman Alloys Ltd recycling centre when an 18 tonne shovel loader hit one of the skips, pushing it towards the other and crushing the employee.
The 46-year-old screamed for help but the driver did not hear him at first. When he realised, he made two attempts to lift one of the skips before finally managing to do so.
Mr Graham was treated for a broken pelvis and other severe injuries at Ayr Hospital and still finds it difficult to walk.
Health and Safety Executive officials concluded that the company had not satisfactorily risk assessed traffic management on site, and had failed to implement any barriers or road markings separating pedestrian workers from vehicles, and the company was fined £80,000.
In other news, a Tufnells Parcels Express Ltd has been fined £150,000 after a man's head was crushed by a lorry in an accident at work.
