Pork manufacturer fined for unguarded machine after worker severs fingerRSS Feed
A leading pork product producer has been fined after a worker severed two fingers in an accident at work involving an unguarded mixing machine.
The worker was reaching into a mixing bowl to remove a piece of blue plastic that had fallen into the mixture, when his index and middle finger on his right hand were severed by the paddles inside the machine.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) report found that, unlike all the other machines on the Tulip Ltd site, the device in question was not guarded.
The 60-year-old required several operations and ten months off work, and is now unable to do the same job.
HSE inspector Dr David Lefever said: "This incident has had a profound effect on the worker. Simple, everyday tasks such as tying shoelaces or doing up buttons have become difficult. He has also had to give up playing cricket for his local team and faces the prospect of further surgery to repair his damaged fingers."
This follows new that sweet manufacturer Tangerine Confectionary Ltd was fined after an accident at work resulted in an employee losing part of his index finger.
