Sweet maker fined after employee loses fingerRSS Feed
A sweet manufacturer has been fined after an accident at work resulted in an employee losing part of their index finger.
In an attempt to clear a blockage on a machine, the worker removed a guard and inserted his hand into the device on September 8th, 2008.
His hand then became caught in the rotating wheels used to flatten the sweet mixture, severing the end of the 25-year-old's index finger.
Due to crushed nerves, doctors were not able to reattach the appendage, and the worker required five months off to recover.
Tangerine Confectionary Ltd has been fined £3,400 and ordered to pay £4,568 in costs.
In other news, Derek Parnaby Cyclones International was fined £10,500 after contractor John Houston cut off three of his fingers using an unsafe band saw.
During a Health and Safety Executive investigation, there was found to be no safety guard in place on the tool, meaning that Mr Houston's fingers were able to come into contact with the blade.
