Design firm fined after worker loses fingersRSS Feed
A design and manufacturing firm has been fined after one of its employees suffered an accident at work.
Derek Parnaby Cyclones International was fined £10,500 after contractor John Houston had three of his fingers severed while using an unsafe band saw.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that there was no safety guard in place when Mr Houston was using the band saw, allowing his fingers to come into contact with the blade.
Derek Parnaby Cyclones International was found guilty of breaking the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 by Darlington Magistrates Court and also ordered to pay £3,266.60 in costs.
Cain Mitchell, an inspector at the HSE, said: "The band saw used by Mr Houston had been in use without a suitable guard for some months while a second saw had been identified by Inspectors as having no guard in place some two years earlier."
The HSE recently found delivery firm Tufnells Parcels Express guilty of not providing a safe environment for its staff after employee Simon Mason was injured by a reversing heavy goods vehicle.
