Man's head crushed in accident at work 'that could have been prevented'RSS Feed
A company has been prosecuted and fined £150,000 after a man's head was crushed by a lorry in an accident at work.
Tufnells Parcels Express Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations following the incident last March.
The accident occurred at the firm's West Horndon depot, where Simon Mason, 22, of Romford in Essex, was working as a warehouse porter.
He was helping a 45ft HGV trailer reverse into a loading bay when his head was crushed against a wall.
His head injuries required constant care for months and he had to undergo several operations before returning to work in February 2011.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found Tufnells had not assessed, controlled, or properly managed the risks arising from vehicle and equipment movements at the depot.
HSE inspector Glyn Davies said: "This firm could have put in place a physical separation between the porters, moving vehicles and the loading bays and a safe way for porters and drivers to communicate with each other.
"None of these measures were evident and so a worker was seriously hurt for no good reason."
Last year in Britain, two workers were killed and 130 received major injuries after being hit by a reversing vehicle.
