Slips and trips 'responsible for 1 in 3 accidents at work'RSS Feed
One accident at work in three is caused by a slip, trip or fall, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Iosh) has said.
A fifth of all injuries lasting more than three days are down to these types of incidents, according to research from the organisation and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Jill Joyce, senior policy and technical advisor at the Iosh, notes that these cost employers around £250 million a year in accident claims and other associated costs.
She argues, however, that it is a "misconception" for businesses to think they can do nothing about slips and trips.
Employers and employees can both take precautions to reduce the likelihood of an accident at work resulting from a slip, trip or fall, Ms Joyce says.
"It is a known fact that where accident prevention techniques have been employed, injuries can be cut by up to 50 per cent," she adds.
HSE figures indicate that the next most common types of workplace injuries arise from handling accidents.
