Drink driving rise may lead to more accident claimsRSS Feed
More motorists could face accident claims because they are drink driving, new figures show.
A targeted summer drink driving campaign has found that the percentage of drivers found to be over the legal alcohol limit has increased from last year.
The figures from the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) reveal that while there were a smaller number of tests compared to last year, there was an increase of eight per cent who tested positive for driving under the influence.
ACPO lead on roads policing Chief Constable Phil Gormley warned that drink driving "significantly" increases people's chances of an accident or losing their licence.
"It is worrying that younger drivers continue to drink and drive and we will be redoubling our efforts to address this unacceptable behaviour," he added.
Ellen Booth from the road safety charity Brake said the figures show that a zero tolerance policy towards drink driving is essential.
"At the moment the public is effectively being asked to guess if they are over an arbitrary limit and breaking the law," she explained.
